The R Word

No .. not Regression, the other R word.

My good friend Teri told me of a conversation she overheard while shopping the other day.

One mother was conversing to another mother at Walmart. The conversation went something like this. Mother A was talking to Mother B, about a mutual friend. The mutual friend, also a mother, has a child struggling with autism.

Mother A said to Mother B - You know Autism is just a fancy word for saying they're retarded.

I cringed when she told me this story.

I hate that word.

My other good friend Vincent, lives by the following Dr. Martin Luther King philosophy:

Violence is not the answer.

I agree, it's not, however, I gave Teri permission to choke out Mother A if she should ever see her in the produce aisle again.

I'm always willing to make an exception on that "Violence is not the answer" theory.

Vincent said he only uses it as a guideline. Not a hard fast rule. So there are some loopholes.

I must be watching too much UFC Fight Night.

Yes, that mother is willing to throw away anything with just a slight blemish. What a waste!

Hey Joey,
Sounds like the only one who is "retarded" is the woman who used the word. Since "retarded" means to have progress stopped or stunted, it fits her perfectly. She is obviously emotionally stunted as well as cognitively, since her information is wrong.

Hang in there,
